Coldplay – the Clock is ticking

We love Clocks and Yellow. British band Coldplay is holding just one Australian show as part of their “Ghost Stories” tour. It will be performed in Sydney, New South Wales, at the Enmore Theatre. The show, scheduled for 19 June 2014, sold out in under 3 minutes.

Demand not meeting supply? You bet!

The general sale for tickets took place at 10am local time on Tuesday, 20 May online via Ticketek.

There was also a limited pre-sale for Live Nation members on Monday, 19 May 2-4pm local time.

At least, the Enmore Theatre has stringent controls in place to stop ticket scalping.

This information below is from the Ticketek site.

Presented by: Live Nation

Live Nation is thrilled to announce one of the biggest bands in the world today – COLDPLAY – will play one very special show at Sydney’s iconic Enmore Theatre in Newton on Thursday June 19.

Today Coldplay deliver their latest album Ghost Stories on Parlophone Records (through Warner Music Australia), featuring singles Magic and the newly released second single A Sky Full of Stars.

Coldplay, who last toured Australia in November 2012 – their Mylo Xyloto Tour playing to sold-out stadiums in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane – will visit Australia for a promotional trip, June 16 – 21.

Stringent anti-scalping measures will be in place for this exclusive live show, including personalised digital tickets – patrons’ names will be printed on their ticket and cross checked against credit card details and photo identification prior to entry into the venue – and the ezyTickets will not be emailed to patrons until the day of the show, June 19.

The latest   Australian government review into ticket scalping  revealed, not surprisingly, a conflict between the primary market sellers and the secondary market sellers, with both pointing the finger at the other saying the other “party” should do more to counteract ticket scalping.

The above measures are an excellent example of what one organisation is doing. Enmore Theatre is a theatre and entertainment venue in Sydney, and since opening in 1908 it is the longest running live music venue still operational in New South Wales. It has the capacity for 1600 in the audience only.

The above measures are achievable for such a small venue. But other venues can also learn from the Enmore Theatre. Plus there are other ethical secondary markets for ticket sales, such as the U.K. Ticket Trust, to learn from also.   An alternative, perhaps, is to go back to the days of queuing up in person outside the box office to get your ticket.
